June is Pride Month, Part 2

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

June is Pride Month, a monthlong celebration of LGBTQ history, accomplishments, and community

Throughout the month of June, we will focus on different aspects of Pride in the eMinder and on the Web site. If you have a Pride-related story you would like us to share, please contact us!

The Pursuit of Equality

“We hold these truths to be self-evident…” Our nation’s founders took a huge leap when they broke from Great Britain, but equality for all people is a goal we still reach for today. One weapon used against those seeking equality for all is that we seek “special rights,” a spurious argument that we somehow feel we’re better than everyone else. As with most struggles for the betterment of people’s conditions, LGBTQ communities continue to strive for greater inclusion as we seek to secure equal rights for everyone, regardless of skin color, sexual attraction, gender identity, ability, and other qualities or characteristics used to divide and discriminate against people. Below is a list of just a few of the historical events, organizations, and people who have helped advance the cause of equality for all in the 20th Century and forward. We are indebted to breakingprejudice.org for its Gay Rights Movement Timeline Activity and its historical PDF source material while putting the list together.
